Gliders teach you to read the sky. There is no other branch of aviation where the relationship between pilot and atmosphere is so direct: no engine noise, no fuel constraint, just thermals, ridge lift, wave and your ability to find them. The performance of a modern glider is staggering — competition sailplanes routinely achieve glide ratios of 50:1 or better, which means flying 50 kilometres horizontal for every kilometre of altitude lost.
The glider world divides naturally into clubs and private owners. Most pilots learn at a club on a two-seat ASK-21 or Grob Twin Astir, then progress to club single-seaters (LS4, ASW-19, Pegase), and eventually move to private ownership of a 15-metre, 18-metre or open-class machine. Modern self-launching motor gliders (Schleicher ASH 26E, Schempp-Hirth Ventus 2cxM, DG-808C) blur the line with powered aircraft — taking off under their own power, climbing to thermal altitude, and folding the engine away for pure soaring.
On MarketplaceAviation we list gliders, sailplanes and motor gliders worldwide. Listings include airframe hours, last DAeC/CAA/EASA inspection status, instrument fit (LXNAV, ClearNav, FLARM), trailer condition, and battery/charging system status — details that move the price on a glider as much as airframe condition.
Schleicher ASK-21 (trainer)
The universal two-seat trainer — thousands at clubs worldwide.
Schleicher ASW-19 / ASW-20 / ASW-27
Classic 15-metre single-seaters — strong used market.
Schempp-Hirth Discus 2 / Ventus 2
Competition standard — 15m and 18m variants.
Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus
Two-seat 20m — XC training and pleasure flying favourite.
LS4 / LS8
Rolladen-Schneider — clean, fast, reliable single-seat racers.
DG-808C / DG-1000
Modern German designs — DG-1000 is the premium two-seat.
Schleicher ASH 25 / ASH 26E
Open class and self-launch performance leaders.
Pipistrel Taurus / Sinus
Self-launching motorgliders — affordable modern option.
Airframe history — composite vs metal vs wood
Modern composite gliders (Schempp-Hirth, Schleicher, DG) need inspection for delamination, hangar rash, and gelcoat condition (refinish costs €15,000–€35,000). Older metal or wood gliders need careful corrosion and glue-joint inspection. Always check the rigging components and main pin lifecycle.
Instruments and electronics
A complete modern glider panel (LXNAV S100/S10, ClearNav, FLARM, vario, gPS logger) is worth \$8,000–\$20,000 alone. Older mechanical-only panels are not competitive for racing or modern XC. Factor the instrument fit into your decision.
Trailer condition (almost always included)
Gliders live in trailers when not flying. A poor trailer (cracked rims, bad bearings, leaky roof) is a real cost. A custom-fit, well-maintained Komet, Eberle or Anschau trailer adds significant value to the package. Verify trailer registration is current too.
Engine status on motor gliders
Self-launching motor gliders use either two-stroke (Solo, Rotax 505) or modern four-stroke engines. Verify retract/extend mechanism operation, last engine service, and any history of prop strikes. Engine work on a folded retractable installation is expensive.
Entry-level club-class gliders like an LS4 or ASW-19 typically trade between €18,000 and €40,000. A modern 15-metre racing glider (Discus 2, Ventus 2, LS8) sits at €45,000–€90,000. Top open-class gliders (ASH 26E, EB28) reach €120,000–€200,000. Modern two-seat motorgliders like the DG-1001 or Duo Discus T can reach €200,000–€280,000.
Yes — a glider pilot certificate (SPL in EASA, glider rating on a US private certificate, BGA solo cert in the UK, etc.) is required. Training typically takes 50–80 launches and costs \$3,000–\$8,000 in club environments — significantly less than power flight. Many pilots learn gliders as a primary licence then add power later.
A motor glider is a glider with an engine — self-launching (the engine takes you to thermal altitude, then folds away), self-sustaining (a small "save" engine to extend a glide), or touring motor glider (TMG, looks like a powered aircraft but with glider performance). Each carries different ratings and operating costs. Self-launching gliders dominate the modern private soaring market.
